What Does TMJ/TMD Mean?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a sliding hinge that anchors your jawbone to your skull. It enables you to shift your jaw up and down or sideways, so you can chew and talk. Issues with your jaw, bones, ligaments, and muscles that control the hinge are called temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

These disorders can lead to jaw joint misalignment, causing major problems like inflammation, pain, discomfort, and inability to move. TMJ/TMD treatment is an excellent option for anyone looking for an accurate way to address their muscle and joint problems in the jaw.

Physical Examination

During your initial TMJ/TMD consultation, you will have a chance to meet Dr. Sarah Myers, who specializes in diagnosing and dealing with TMJ/TMD disorders. To learn more about your jaw joint problem, your dentist in Cary will perform a physical examination on your jaw, neck area, and head to monitor movements and see how your TMJ functions.

Treatment Plan

Our dentists will also take X-rays and tomographic imaging of your jawbone and conduct a JVA (Joint Vibration Analysis) test to check if there is any noise on either side of the jaw joints. Then they will decide what treatment option is effective for alleviating your pain.

Impressions of Your Teeth

Depending on what your doctor finds out during the physical assessment, they may develop a model of your teeth through a digital impression technique. This will let your dentist understand your individual needs so they can create a tailored treatment plan that meets these needs.
